Rolex GMT-Master 16700 - ‘Bicchierini’ Black Dial - Pepsi Bezel
Description
Rolex GMT-Master 16700 - ‘Bicchierini’ Black Dial - Pepsi Bezel
The Rolex GMT-Master reference 16700, introduced in 1988, represents the final chapter of the original GMT-Master lineage before Rolex’s complete transition to the GMT-Master II family. Developed to meet the needs of pilots and international travellers, it preserved the model’s legendary dual-time-zone functionality while incorporating a number of technical refinements that enhanced everyday usability.
Housed in a 40mm stainless steel Oyster case, the 16700 maintained the robust construction and balanced proportions that had made the GMT-Master one of Rolex’s most successful professional watches. Its bi-directional 24-hour rotating bezel, used in conjunction with the distinctive red GMT hand, allowed the wearer to track a second time zone with ease. Throughout its production, Rolex offered the model with several bezel configurations, including the iconic blue-and-red “Pepsi”, the red-and-black “Coke”, and the more discreet all-black variant.
Powering the watch is the Rolex Caliber 3175, a reliable automatic movement equipped with a quickset date function, representing a notable improvement over earlier GMT-Master references. Unlike the contemporary GMT-Master II ref. 16710, the 16700 retained the traditional GMT-Master architecture, relying on the rotating bezel rather than an independently adjustable hour hand to display a second time zone. The reference also benefited from the adoption of a sapphire crystal, providing increased scratch resistance while marking the transition toward a more modern generation of Rolex sports watches.
Produced until 1999, the GMT-Master 16700 remains highly regarded among collectors as the last true GMT-Master, representing the culmination of a lineage that began in the 1950s. Combining vintage proportions, practical functionality, and modern reliability, it occupies a unique position within the history of Rolex travel watches.
The present example, dating to 1990, is fitted with the iconic blue-and-red “Pepsi” bezel, arguably the configuration most closely associated with the GMT-Master name. Preserved in good overall condition, the watch displays the honest signs of use expected from a well-maintained tool watch of its age. The case, dial, and bracelet remain highly attractive, retaining the character and charm that have made early GMT-Master references so desirable among collectors. Altogether, this example represents an appealing opportunity to acquire a classic GMT-Master from the final years of the model’s production, combining historical significance, everyday wearability, and one of Rolex’s most recognisable designs.
