Description

Rolex Submariner 5513 - ‘Bicchierini’ Black Glossy Dial - Unpolished

Among the most influential wristwatches ever created, the Rolex Submariner occupies a unique position in horological history. Conceived as a professional diving instrument and introduced in 1953, it rapidly transcended its original purpose to become one of the most recognisable and enduring watch designs of all time. Throughout the following decades, Rolex continuously refined the model while preserving the essential characteristics that had established its reputation among both professionals and enthusiasts.

A major milestone in the Submariner’s evolution came with the introduction of reference 5512 in 1959. This generation established many of the design elements now considered synonymous with the collection, including the 40 mm Oyster case and the addition of crown guards to enhance durability and functionality. During the development process, Rolex experimented with different crown-guard profiles before adopting the rounded configuration that would ultimately become an enduring hallmark of the model.

In 1962, Rolex introduced reference 5513, a non-chronometer-certified alternative that retained the same robust architecture and visual appeal while offering a more streamlined presentation. Produced until 1989, the 5513 enjoyed one of the longest production runs of any Submariner reference and remains highly regarded among collectors for its clean, uncluttered dial layout. The absence of additional chronometer text contributes to a sense of balance and purity that many enthusiasts consider the definitive expression of the no-date Submariner.

Over its nearly three decades of production, the reference evolved through several dial configurations reflecting the changing aesthetics and technical standards of the period. Early examples featured gilt dials with glossy finishes and printed gilt text, followed by the matte dial era that came to define much of the model's vintage identity. During the final years of production, Rolex introduced glossy dials fitted with applied white-gold surrounds around the luminous indexes, a significant step toward the visual language adopted by modern Submariner references.

The present example, dating to 1986, belongs to this final and highly desirable phase of production. Preserved in unpolished condition, the watch retains the strong lines, proportions, and authentic character sought after by discerning collectors. The case displays the honest signs of careful wear accumulated over the decades, while the dial exhibits a very light and even bloom, a subtle characteristic consistent with its age. Overall, the watch presents exceptionally well and stands as an attractive, original example of the legendary Submariner 5513, combining vintage charm, collector appeal, and the timeless purity of Rolex’s most celebrated no-date diver.
