Zenith El Primero A386 - Three Color Subdials - Mk3 - Mesh Bracelet
Description
Zenith El Primero A386 - Three Color Subdials - Mk3 - Mesh Bracelet
In 1965, to celebrate its centenary, Zenith embarked on an ambitious project that would ultimately change the course of modern watchmaking: the development of the first automatic chronograph movement. Although self-winding mechanisms had existed since Abraham-Louis Perrelet’s pioneering invention in 1770, integrating this technology into a chronograph remained an unprecedented technical challenge. Zenith initially aimed to complete the project within its centenary year, but the ambitious deadline was missed as rival manufacturers entered the race to achieve what would become one of the most significant horological breakthroughs of the twentieth century.
Zenith ultimately prevailed, unveiling the revolutionary El Primero calibre in September 1969. Among the first watches to house this groundbreaking movement was the reference 384, distinguished by its 37mm stainless steel tonneau-shaped case, mushroom pushers, and panda-style tricompax dial. The reference A385 introduced another milestone with one of the industry’s earliest gradient-effect smoked dials, while the reference A386 would become the most emblematic of the original trio. Its distinctive tricolour chronograph counters, in blue, grey, and silver, established a design signature that remains synonymous with the El Primero collection today. This celebrated configuration continues to inspire the Chronomaster Original line, preserving the spirit of Zenith’s pioneering achievement.
The present example is a well-preserved Zenith El Primero A386 dating from the early 1970s, displaying an attractive and coherent overall appearance. The case retains its original geometry, with well-defined lines that remain clearly visible, while the dial has developed a light, natural patina consistent with the watch’s age, adding character without detracting from its overall appeal. The “A under H” dial and “MK3” caseback bearing the NATO star are noteworthy details that contribute to its period-correct configuration. The winding crown is a generic replacement, fitted during a previous service over the course of the watch’s life. More recently, the timepiece underwent a complete service in September 2026, carried out by an independent specialist workshop rather than Zenith itself. It displays light signs of use accumulated over the decades, consistent with its age and history.
The watch is accompanied by a hammered stainless steel MESH-style bracelet, whose robust construction complements the sporting character of the El Primero while remaining coherent with its vintage aesthetic. The combination of its well-preserved case, naturally patinated dial, distinctive “A under H” configuration, and “MK3” NATO-star caseback makes this a particularly appealing example of the celebrated A386. A landmark in the history of automatic chronograph watchmaking, this early El Primero brings together considerable historical significance, authentic vintage character, and an appealing patina that reflects the passage of time.
