For decades, the Daytona had progressed through careful, incremental refinements, its most notable technical improvement being the introduction of screw-down pushers, while its core architecture remained largely consistent with that of the original reference 6239. With the arrival of the 165XX series, however, the chronograph entered a completely new era.

At the heart of this generation was the Rolex Calibre 4030, a movement derived from the legendary Zenith El Primero. Rather than simply adopting the calibre in its original configuration, Rolex undertook a comprehensive programme of re-engineering at its Geneva facilities. More than 200 modifications were introduced, including the removal of the date mechanism, a reduction of the frequency from 36,000 to 28,800 vibrations per hour, and a complete redesign of the regulating system. These changes ensured the movement met Rolex’s demanding standards for durability, accuracy, and long-term reliability.

The watch is preserved in excellent overall condition, showing the natural and expected signs of time and previous use. The case remains attractive and well preserved, while the Oyster bracelet displays a slight amount of play, consistent with its age and use. These honest signs of wear contribute to the authenticity of the example without detracting from its overall appeal.
