Jaeger LeCoultre Memovox Polaris E859 - Reprinted Dial

The Jaeger-LeCoultre Memovox Polaris reference E859 stands as one of the most distinctive and intellectually ambitious dive watches ever produced by the Grande Maison. Introduced in the mid-1960s, the Polaris represents the culmination of Jaeger-LeCoultre’s pioneering work on alarm-equipped wristwatches, evolving from the earlier Memovox models into a fully fledged professional diving instrument. Developed during a period in which tool watches were rapidly advancing in both technical capability and design clarity, the Polaris distinguished itself through the integration of a mechanical alarm complication within a waterproof, purpose-built diving case.

The reference E859 was conceived in the early 1960s and produced in limited numbers, with total production estimated at just under 1,800 pieces across its different executions, underscoring its rarity within the broader landscape of vintage sports watches. The model is immediately recognizable by its triple-crown configuration, which controls time-setting, the internal rotating dive bezel, and the alarm function.

A defining characteristic of the Polaris lies in its highly legible dial architecture, featuring bold luminous markers and a distinctive layered layout that separates time indication, diving scale and alarm functionality. Over time, different production batches introduced subtle variations in dial execution, contributing to the model’s strong collector appeal today.

The present example, dated approximately to 1966, is preserved in good overall aesthetic conditions, showing visible signs of use consistent with its age and intended tool-watch nature. 

The dial has been reprinted and is therefore not original to production, while the caseback presents damage and the alarm pin requires intervention for proper restoration of functionality. The engraving on the caseback remains consistent with period production details, further supporting its historical attribution.

The watch retains the strong technical and historical identity that defines the E859, remaining a significant and highly recognizable expression of Jaeger-LeCoultre’s early dive-watch innovation and its unique approach to combining horology with functional acoustic signaling.
