Description

Rolex Daytona Zenith 16520 - Inverted 6 White Dial - Early Satin Bracelet

The 'myth': this is the nickname the Rolex Daytona has earned over the years among Italian collectors. While the manual-wind models have now achieved iconic collectability, it was their successor, the 'Zenith' Daytona, that propelled the watch to global stardom. In 1988, at the Basel Watch Fair, Rolex unveiled the new Daytona to celebrate the model's twenty-fifth anniversary. After decades of subtle refinements, aside from the pivotal revolution of screw-down pushers, the Daytona was completely reimagined for the first time since its inception with the 6239 in the early 1960s.

Most importantly, with this new version, the Daytona would feature, for the first time, an automatic movement: the Rolex caliber 4030, derived from the historically important Zenith El Primero.

Rather than simply adopting the calibre in its original configuration, each Zenith ébauche underwent extensive reworking in the Geneva workshops, with roughly half of its components replaced and a total of around 200 modifications carried out.

Visually, the changes were equally impactful. The case grew from 37.5 mm to a modern 40 mm and now featured crown guards surrounding the screw-down pushers, bringing the Daytona closer in design language to the rest of Rolex's Professional models. The dial was redesigned accordingly, further enhancing the watch's modern appeal.

Production numbers always remained limited due to Rolex's restricted access to Zenith movements, while, in stark contrast, customers flooded authorized dealers, eager to purchase the new Daytona. This significant imbalance between supply and demand made the 'Zenith' Daytona the first watch in history to command a premium over its retail price on the secondary market — a phenomenon that has been repeated with every subsequent iteration, continuing to this day.

Low production numbers mean that finding an example is already a challenging task; finding one originally fitted with a satin-finished bracelet is an even rarer achievement. Reserved exclusively for early production pieces, this vintage-style, fully satin bracelet is particularly prized by collectors for the uncompromisingly sporty character it lends to the watch. This example, dating to circa 1993, has been very well preserved, retaining the distinctive charm and authenticity that make early Zenith Daytonas among the most sought-after modern classics.
