Tudor Oysterdate Submariner ‘Snowflake’ 7021/0 - Blue Dial and Bezel - ‘Roulette’ Date Wheel

Tudor was founded in 1926 by Hans Wilsdorf as a trademark and became an official brand in 1946, shortly after the end of the Second World War. Its mission was clear: to offer robust and high-quality watches benefiting from Rolex’s reliability, while being positioned at a more accessible price point. Following the success of the Oyster case, Tudor adopted the same waterproof case concept, becoming the only other brand within the Wilsdorf group to benefit from this technology.

During its early decades, Tudor watches shared many components with Rolex, including cases, crowns and bracelets, differing mainly in branding and the use of outsourced movements rather than Rolex calibres. This close relationship remained a defining characteristic until the late 1960s, when Tudor began to develop a more independent identity.

Around this time, in 1969, Tudor introduced references 7016 and 7021, marking a decisive departure from Rolex’s traditional design language with bold square hour markers and the now-iconic 'Snowflake' hands. These elements created a distinctive visual identity, establishing Tudor’s Submariner as a model with its own character.

Reference 7021 was importantly the first Tudor Submariner to feature a date display, following closely Rolex’s introduction of the reference 1680. To highlight this change, Tudor revived a detail borrowed from early Rolex Datejust models: the “roulette” date wheel, featuring alternating red and black numerals.

Offered in both black and blue configurations, the present example features the more desirable blue dial and bezel combination. Over time, the original vibrant blue tone of the bezel has gracefully evolved into an attractive light blue hue, beautifully complementing the warm patina of the luminous hour markers and handset. Fitted with a Tudor bracelet, this 1969 example remains in good overall condition featuring a beautiful dial with a minor imperfection near the 2 o’clock marker and the bracelet displays the expected stretch, entirely consistent with normal use over time. This example represents a compelling expression of Tudor’s transition towards an independent and recognisable identity. For this very reason, it remains highly appreciated and particularly sought-after among collectors of vintage diving and tool watches.
