Porsche Design by IWC Ocean 2000 3524-001 - Titanium - Full Set and Service

The collaboration between Porsche Design and IWC Schaffhausen stands among the most influential partnerships in late twentieth-century watchmaking. Combining the uncompromising functional philosophy of Ferdinand Alexander Porsche—the designer of the legendary Porsche 911—with IWC's renowned engineering expertise, the collaboration gave rise to a series of highly innovative timepieces that challenged the conventions of traditional Swiss watchmaking through minimalist aesthetics, technical sophistication, and the pioneering use of advanced materials.

Introduced during the early 1980s, the Ocean 2000 represented the pinnacle of this collaboration and established a new benchmark for professional dive watches. Designed by F. A. Porsche, the watch followed the principle that form should always follow function, resulting in a clean, highly legible design free from unnecessary ornamentation. At a time when stainless steel dominated sports watch production, the Ocean 2000 distinguished itself through the extensive use of titanium, a material chosen for its exceptional strength, corrosion resistance, and remarkably low weight. Although commonplace today, titanium was then extremely challenging to machine, highlighting IWC's considerable manufacturing expertise.

Beyond its innovative construction, the Ocean 2000 achieved impressive technical performance. Despite its slim profile and elegant proportions, it offered water resistance to 2,000 metres, an extraordinary specification for the period. Its technical credentials were further reinforced by the development of a military version commissioned by the German Navy (Bundesmarine), demonstrating the model's capability as a genuine professional instrument.

Reference 3524-001 belongs to the later evolution of the Ocean 2000 and faithfully preserves the model's distinctive identity. Its integrated titanium case and bracelet create a seamless, ergonomic profile, while the matte black dial, luminous hands, and uncluttered layout maximise legibility under all conditions. Powered by a reliable automatic movement with date display, the watch combines everyday practicality with the robust performance expected from a professional diving instrument.

The present specimen, preserved in overall excellent conditions, showing signs of normal wear consistent with age and use with the normal strech of the bracelet owing to its construction.

Today, the Porsche Design by IWC Ocean 2000 is widely regarded as one of the defining sports watches of the 1980s and an important milestone in the evolution of titanium wristwatches. Its timeless industrial design, historical significance, and advanced engineering continue to attract collectors, while Reference 3524-001 represents an excellent example of the successful fusion of German design philosophy and Swiss mechanical watchmaking.
