Rolex GMT-Master 1675/8 - Captivating Blue-Toned ‘Nipple’ Dial - 18K Yellow Gold

Rolex has maintained a close association with international travel and professional aviation since the introduction of the GMT-Master in 1955. Originally developed in collaboration with Pan American Airways for long-haul pilots, the model combined the robustness of the Oyster case with a practical 24-hour indication, allowing the wearer to simultaneously read two different time zones.

Reference 1675 represents one of the longest-running and most recognisable generations of the GMT-Master, produced from the late 1950s through the 1980s. Building upon the foundations established by the earlier reference 6542, the 1675 introduced a larger 40 mm case, crown guards and a more robust construction, while replacing the fragile and radioactive Bakelite bezel insert with a practical aluminium version.

The reference 1675/8 represents the precious-metal interpretation of the GMT-Master, crafted in 18K yellow gold. While introducing a more luxurious character through its noble materials, it preserved the practical functionality and unmistakable identity of Rolex's pioneering travel watch, while retaining defining vintage features such as its acrylic crystal. It is powered by the Rolex calibre 1575, a self-winding chronometer-certified movement renowned for its reliability and precision. Although marked "1570" beneath the balance bridge, as was Rolex's practice at the time, the movement incorporates the additional 24-hour mechanism specific to the GMT-Master.

The present example features the highly desirable black "Nipple" dial, a collector's nickname referring to the applied solid gold hour markers with raised luminous centres found on precious-metal GMT-Master references. Over the decades, the original black dial has developed a remarkable bluish hue, creating a particularly attractive and distinctive appearance that further enhances its vintage appeal.
