Description
Rolex GMT-Master 16758 - Rare Black Nipple Dial - 18K Yellow Gold
The Rolex GMT-Master was originally developed during the 1950s as a professional instrument for international pilots, allowing the simultaneous reading of two different time zones through an additional 24-hour hand and a rotating bezel. Interestingly, although it was conceived as a tool watch and developed with the assistance of Pan American World Airways (Pan Am) pilots, the GMT-Master was offered in precious metal from the very beginning of its production.
This seemingly extravagant combination for the 1950s reflected Rolex's remarkably forward-thinking approach, demonstrating that professional functionality and luxurious execution were not mutually exclusive. It also demonstrated the brand's ability to anticipate evolving market demand, catering to the emerging class of international travellers and jet-setters. This philosophy proved to be visionary and has remained an integral part of the GMT-Master's evolution ever since.
Introduced at the beginning of the 1980s, reference 16758 represented the full 18K yellow-gold evolution of the classic GMT-Master. Retaining the established 40 mm Oyster case architecture, while also boasting several important technical developments, including a sapphire crystal and the automatic calibre 3075, equipped with hacking seconds and a practical quick-set date function. Interestingly, the adoption of the more durable sapphire crystal was reserved for the yellow-gold model, further distinguishing reference 16758 from its stainless-steel counterpart.
The most appreciated configuration available for this reference is the black 'nipple' dial, named after the characteristic raised shape of its applied hour markers. Framed in yellow gold, these sculptural indexes and the gold inscriptions create a strong visual contrast against the dark dial, while also forming an important link to earlier GMT-Master models in precious metal. A detail that, over the course of its production run, would eventually be replaced by the modern black glossy dial. The black dial is paired with the classic rotating bezel rendered in black, completing the monochromatic aesthetic of this highly sought-after configuration.
The reference 16758 has a particularly striking identity, balancing the robust proportions of a Rolex professional watch with the elegance of precious-metal construction. This configuration successfully combines modernity and robustness with vintage aesthetics. Altogether, the GMT-Master 16758 represents an important transitional chapter in the history of the collection, with the present specimen preserved in very good condition, retains a full-bodied case with well-defined proportions and the Super Jubilee bracelet with concealed Crownclasp exhibits the tipical stretch, consistent with normal wear and typical for this type of bracelet.
