The GMT-Master has been a cornerstone of Rolex's collection since its debut in 1954. Developed in collaboration with Pan American World Airways, it was conceived in response to the rapid expansion of the aviation industry during the 1950s. As long-distance air travel became increasingly common, pilots and flight crews required a reliable instrument capable of tracking multiple time zones simultaneously. Rolex answered this demand with the now-iconic GMT-Master, a watch designed specifically to meet the needs of professional aviators. Its defining feature, a rotating 24-hour bezel paired with an additional hand completing one full rotation every 24 hours, allowed the wearer to read two time zones at a glance. This groundbreaking functionality established the GMT-Master as both an essential aviation tool and a pioneering innovation in the world of travel watches. A major evolution arrived in 1959 with the introduction of reference 1675, which succeeded the original reference 6542. This new iteration introduced several significant upgrades, including crown guards, a more robust case, and an improved movement. Produced for over two decades, the 1675 became one of the longest-running and most celebrated references in the GMT-Master lineage.
Throughout its long lifespan, the reference 1675 was fitted with several generations of dials, whose variations in typography and graphic layout are today carefully classified by collectors. The present example, belonging to the later executions of the reference, features a well-preserved 'MK5' dial with evenly aged lume plots. The handset relumed during the years, exhibits a richer, more pronounced patina, lending the watch a particularly attractive vintage character. This warm aging contrasts beautifully with the vibrant, unfaded red and blue "Pepsi" bezel insert, which retains its original, characteristic colors.
Altogether, this example has been preserved in very good overall condition and is now offered to the highest proposal!
