Description
Rolex Cosmograph Daytona 116520 - ‘APH’ White Dial - Box and Papers
The Rolex Daytona 116520, introduced in 2000, represents a defining moment in the evolution of the legendary chronograph, as it was the first Daytona to be powered by an entirely in-house movement. For decades, Rolex had relied on modified third-party calibers for its automatic chronographs, but with the development of the Caliber 4130, the brand asserted its technical independence.
This groundbreaking movement introduced several improvements over its predecessor, including a vertical clutch mechanism for smoother chronograph operation, a reduced number of components for greater reliability, and an increased power reserve. The 4130 also featured an innovative redesign of the chronograph's architecture.
Aesthetically, the 116520 maintained the iconic design language of the Daytona, with a 40mm Oyster case crafted entirely from Rolex's robust 904L stainless steel, a metal prized for its superior resistance to corrosion and exceptional ability to hold a polished finish. The model featured a solid-link Oyster bracelet with an upgraded clasp, reinforcing both comfort and durability.
Its dial, available in classic black or white, displayed a more refined and balanced layout compared to previous models, improving legibility while preserving the Daytona's distinctive tri-compax chronograph arrangement. The stainless steel bezel, engraved with a tachymeter scale, underscored the model's racing heritage, staying true to the spirit of the Daytona collection.
The reference 116520 remained in production for 16 years, solidifying its status as a modern classic before being succeeded in 2016 by the Daytona 116500LN, which introduced a ceramic bezel. Despite this transition, the 116520 continues to be highly regarded among collectors and enthusiasts for its historical significance, technical innovations, and timeless design. It stands as a testament to Rolex's commitment to precision, performance, and enduring craftsmanship.
The Rolex Cosmograph Daytona 116520 with White "APH" dial represents one of the most subtle yet sought-after variations within the modern production of Rolex. The nickname "APH" derives from the slight spacing between the letters in "COSMOGR APH" on the dial, a typographical peculiarity introduced for a short period and now highly appreciated by collectors.
The present specimen from 2014 (Date of Sale), preserved in excellent condition, is accompanied with its Set: Box, Outer box, Warranty, Warranty holder, Booklets and Green Tag.
