Description
Rolex Submariner Date 1680 ‘Red Sub’ - ‘MK5’ Pallettoni Black Dial
Introduced in 1953 alongside the Explorer and Turn-O-Graph, the Submariner began to reach a new stage of maturity in 1959 with the arrival of reference 5512, a key turning point in the model's evolution. This reference introduced several elements that would become defining features of the Submariner, including the enlarged 40 mm case and the addition of protective crown guards.
In 1962, Rolex broadened the Submariner range with the launch of reference 5513, a non-COSC-certified counterpart to the 5512 conceived as a more accessible alternative. A few years later, in 1967, the collection took another important step forward with the introduction of reference 1680, the first Submariner to incorporate a date complication. This innovation marked a major milestone for the model, expanding its appeal beyond professional divers by combining the robust functionality of a tool watch with the practicality of a date display. The formula proved immensely successful and remains a cornerstone of the Submariner line to this day.
Early examples of the reference 1680, produced until approximately 1975, are distinguished by the famous "Red Sub" dial, where the word "Submariner" appears printed in red. These early executions are particularly admired by collectors for their rarity and strong visual character. Later versions adopted entirely white text, making the original red-letter dials especially desirable today.
The present example, dating to 1972, features a beautiful MK5 "Red Sub" dial, widely regarded as one of the most attractive dial configurations produced for the reference. The red "Submariner" designation stands out vividly against the matte black background, while the elegant serif typography used across the dial printing, including the numerals, reveals remarkable refinement when examined closely.
Equally appealing is the natural ageing of the luminous elements. The large "Pallettoni" hour markers have developed a warm and even light patina, lending the watch a particularly charming vintage character. The bezel insert has also aged attractively over time, displaying a subtle fade with delicate bluish tones that further enhances the overall aesthetic.
After more than fifty years, the watch remains beautifully preserved and represents a highly attractive example of one of the most celebrated vintage Submariner references. For collectors and enthusiasts alike, this 1680 "Red Sub" embodies both the historical significance and the enduring appeal that define the golden era of Rolex sports watches.
