Rolex GMT-Master 16700 - ‘Coke’ Bezel - Rolex Warranty

The Rolex GMT-Master ref. 16700, introduced in 1988, represents the final chapter of the original GMT-Master lineage before Rolex's full transition to the GMT-Master II series. Conceived for pilots and global travelers, it preserved the brand's iconic dual-time-zone functionality while incorporating meaningful technical refinements. Housed in a 40mm stainless steel Oyster case, the 16700 retained the classic proportions and robust construction that defined earlier GMT-Masters. A bi-directional 24-hour bezel, paired with the signature red GMT hand, allowed the wearer to track a second time zone. Bezel configurations included the iconic blue-and-red 'Pepsi,' the red-and-black 'Coke,' and a more understated all-black option. Powering the watch is the Rolex Caliber 3175, an automatic movement featuring a quickset date, an improvement over previous GMT references. Unlike the GMT-Master II (ref. 16710), the 16700 does not feature an independently adjustable hour hand; instead, the second time zone is tracked via the rotating bezel. Another notable update was the introduction of a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal, bringing added durability while maintaining vintage character. Produced until 1999, the GMT-Master 16700 remains highly regarded among collectors as the last true GMT-Master before the evolution to the GMT-Master II. It strikes a compelling balance between vintage charm and modern reliability. This particular example was produced in 1990 and originally sold in Bucherer Boutique in St. Gallen, Switzerland, as confirmed by the accompanying original Rolex punched warranty. The watch features a tritium dial, the sporty Oyster bracelet and the less-seen yet highly captivating red-and-black 'Coke' bezel, which has aged exceptionally well, retaining vivid and attractive coloration. Notably, the watch has been preserved in excellent overall condition.
