Description
Rolex Cosmograph Daytona 6265 - ‘MK1’ Argentè Dial - Excellent Conditions
In the early 1960s, Rolex introduced the reference 6239, a model that revealed the Crown's deepening connection with the world of motor racing and, more significantly, marked the birth of what would become an icon: the Rolex Daytona.
Over the following quarter century, the manually wound Daytonas—so fondly regarded by collectors—progressed through a succession of references, each refining the formula. This distinguished evolution reached its apex in 1972 with the unveiling of the final manually wound iterations before the advent of automatic calibres: the celebrated references 6263 and 6265.
Differentiated solely by their bezels, these sister models are widely considered the ultimate expression of the hand-wound Cosmograph. As the concluding chapter of this era, they incorporated numerous technical and aesthetic enhancements, representing the most accomplished and mature form of the classic design.
Powering these references is the Valjoux 727 calibre, an upgraded movement operating at a higher frequency to deliver enhanced precision and improved chronograph performance. Rolex further strengthened the model's robustness by fitting a larger 7mm Triplock winding crown. Combined with the revised case profile first seen on the transitional references 6262 and 6264, and the innovative screw-down pushers initially trialled on the prototype 6240, these developments finally enabled the Daytona to rightfully carry the coveted "Oyster" designation.
The present watch, a reference 6265 dating from 1973, is fitted with the engraved stainless steel bezel and ranks among the earliest examples to be delivered with the folded-link Oyster bracelet. Both case and bracelet are preserved in outstanding condition; however, it is the dial that most compellingly distinguishes this piece.
The argenté "T SWISS T" dial is superbly conserved: its silvered surface remains crisp and luminous, beautifully contrasted by the rich black subsidiary registers. The raised central section retains its original azurage finish in remarkably fine state, reflecting the careful stewardship this watch has evidently enjoyed. Completing the ensemble, the hands and fully intact luminous hour markers have matured to an attractive, creamy patina, lending warmth and depth to an already exceptional and highly desirable timepiece.
