Description

Rolex Explorer II 1655 ‘Freccione’ - ‘MK5’ Black Matte Dial - Final Series

Introduced in 1971 as reference 1655, the Rolex Explorer II was not intended to replace the original Explorer, but rather to serve alongside it as its more specialised, professionally focused sibling. Unlike its predecessor, which was a simple time-only watch, the Explorer II introduced a practical day/night indicator through its fixed engraved bezel and the now-iconic orange 24-hour hand. This distinctive detail earned the model its famous nickname, 'Freccione' (Italian for 'big arrow'). Designed with cave explorers and adventurers in mind, this straightforward yet ingenious complication proved essential in environments where natural light was absent, marking a significant evolution within the Explorer family and shifting its purpose toward more technical applications. This inaugural Explorer II reference stands out with a dial design that reflects the bold, unconventional aesthetic of the 1970s. Powered by the reliable Rolex Caliber 1575 (shared with the GMT-Master), the watch is housed in a 40 mm stainless steel Oyster case featuring thick lugs and a fully brushed finish — a visual expression of its rugged, utilitarian nature. Production of the Rolex Explorer II ref. 1655 concluded around 1984, making this 1981 example a particularly late specimen. It features the final iterations of the dial and bezel: an 'MK5' black matte dial paired with an 'MK3' bezel. Additionally, it is fitted with the more modern, robust solid-link Oyster bracelet, representing the technical and aesthetic culmination of this reference's evolution. Design-wise, the 1655 stands apart — unlike anything that came before or after. Its bold aesthetic, historical significance, and purpose-driven architecture have cemented its reputation as one of the most iconic vintage Rolex sports watches ever produced. Preserved in excellent condition, this 1655 exemplifies the refined final form of this legendary reference and is now available to the highest bidder.
