Description

Rolex GMT-Master 16750 - Rare and Early ‘Pallettoni’ Black Matte Dial - ‘Pepsi’ Bezel

Introduced in 1980, the Rolex GMT-Master reference 16750 succeeded the legendary 1675, ushering in a new era for one of Rolex's most iconic models. The 16750 represents a compelling synthesis of vintage charm and modern innovation, combining the aesthetics of the classic four-digit GMTs with technical advancements that would come to define the subsequent five-digit generation. While retaining key design elements from its predecessor, most notably the domed acrylic crystal that imparts a warm, vintage character, the 16750 introduced a significant mechanical upgrade in the form of the Caliber 3075. Operating at a higher beat rate for improved accuracy, this movement also brought the quickset date function to the GMT line for the first time, greatly enhancing convenience for daily wear and frequent travel. Throughout its production run from 1980 to 1988, the reference 16750 underwent several notable aesthetic evolutions. Early examples were fitted with matte dials featuring painted tritium hour markers, closely echoing the design language of the 1675. Later models transitioned to glossy dials with applied white-gold "Inini" hour markers filled with luminous material, reflecting Rolex's gradual shift toward a more contemporary visual identity. The early matte dials, often referred to as "Pallettoni" for their larger and more pronounced hour markers, are particularly prized by collectors for their vintage appeal and relative rarity, making examples such as the one offered here especially desirable. Dating to 1982, this early GMT-Master 16750 is well preserved and rich in character. Its rare "Pallettoni" dial displays a strong, warm patina across the hour markers and handset, while the iconic red-and-blue "Pepsi" bezel remains strikingly vivid, resulting in a highly compelling configuration. The case retains strong proportions, further underscoring the watch's quality and originality.
