Description
Cartier Baignoire XL 3033 - Opaline Guilloché Dial - 18K Rose Gold - Full Set
Cartier was founded in Paris in 1847 by Louis-François Cartier, who took over the workshop of his mentor. In 1874, his son Alfred assumed leadership of the maison, though it was Alfred's three sons, Louis, Pierre, and Jacques, who ultimately elevated Cartier to international prominence, each directing a key branch in Paris, London, and New York respectively.
Louis, the eldest, oversaw the Paris boutique from the late nineteenth century. It was there that he formed a close friendship with Alberto Santos-Dumont, the celebrated Brazilian aviator renowned in turn-of-the-century Paris for his pioneering flights. Santos-Dumont approached Louis Cartier with a practical challenge: he required a watch that could be read easily while flying, as a pocket watch was cumbersome in the cockpit. In 1904, Cartier answered this request by creating what is widely considered the first men's wristwatch, later named the 'Santos' in honour of its visionary commissioner.
A firm believer in the future of the wristwatch, Louis Cartier continued to explore new forms and proportions over the following decades, giving rise to some of the maison's most enduring creations, including the legendary Tank. Among his earliest and most visionary designs was the Baignoire, first conceived in 1912. The model later evolved into its definitive elongated oval shape in 1958, a silhouette that would become one of Cartier's most recognisable expressions of elegance.
The name Baignoire, French for "bathtub", is often thought to reference the watch's softly curved, organic form. Others suggest it may instead draw inspiration from the refined baignoire seating found in opera houses, an association that suits a watch defined by discretion and quiet luxury. Whatever its true origin, the design marked a decisive break from the traditional round cases of the era, reflecting Cartier's enduring commitment to creativity and innovation.
Reinterpreted many times over the decades, the Baignoire has continually evolved while preserving its timeless character. The present example, dating to 2024, represents one of these later modernised interpretations. Crafted in 18K rose gold and offered in the XL size, it provides a more confident wrist presence while maintaining the graceful proportions and understated refinement that define the Baignoire line.
Preserved in excellent condition, this Cartier is an ideal choice for those seeking the elegance of the French maison in a subtly contemporary expression. It is accompanied by its original Cartier box and warranty, completing a refined and highly desirable offering that effortlessly combines heritage, style, and wearability.
