Originally introduced in 1957, the Omega Speedmaster was conceived as a high-precision chronograph designed for motorsport timing. It was the first watch to feature a tachymeter scale on the bezel rather than on the dial: a design innovation that would go on to define the chronograph genre. The Speedmaster achieved legendary status in 1969 as the first watch worn on the Moon during the Apollo XI mission, earning its iconic nickname, the "Moonwatch", and securing its place as Omega's most celebrated model. To mark the 30th Anniversary of the Apollo XI lunar landing, Omega introduced a special commemorative Speedmaster reference, the 3560.50.00. Closely following the architecture of the classic Moonwatch, it retains all of the defining design elements of the Professional model, most notably the twisted lugs and the highly legible black dial with printed Omega logo. Powering this reference is the Omega Calibre 1861, a direct descendant of the historic 861 movement. Renowned for its robustness and reliability, the 1861 continues the mechanical lineage that accompanied astronauts on their missions, offering proven performance and enduring accuracy. The caseback is adorned with commemorative engravings dedicated to Apollo XI, including the historic phrase: "Hello Houston, Tranquility Base here, the Eagle has landed": a direct reference to Neil Armstrong's iconic transmission upon touching down on the lunar surface. This engraving firmly anchors the watch to one of the most significant moments in human history. Produced in a limited run of 9,999 individually numbered examples, this reference strikes a balance between exclusivity and historical relevance, making it a highly appealing piece for collectors of the Speedmaster line.
