Rolex Daytona 6263 - Very Rare ‘Sigma Big Red’ Black Dial - ‘MK2’ Black Acrylic bezel

Rolex Daytona 6263 – Very Rare 'Sigma Big Red' Black Dial – 'MK2' Black Acrylic Bezel The 6263, together with its sibling the 6265, represents the final chapter in the celebrated dynasty of manual-wind Daytonas. As the concluding references of the 4-digit generation, they embody the culmination of every technical and aesthetic refinement introduced since the model's inception with the 6239 in the early 1960s. At their core beats the Valjoux 727, the most advanced evolution of Rolex's long-running development of the Valjoux 72 base movement. The introduction of a larger 7 mm screw-down crown, combined with the redefined case shape first seen in the transitional 6262 and 6264, and the revolutionary screw-down pushers tested originally on the prototype 6240, finally justified the appearance of the word "Oyster" on the dial. Early examples of the reference featured the coveted "Sigma" dial (as seen in Lot ID: 0412028). These dials are named for the discreet sigma symbols — also known as *goutte à prior* — flanking the "T Swiss T" inscription at 6 o'clock, indicating that the hour markers and hands were crafted from gold, in this context white gold. As production progressed, the Sigma dials were gradually replaced by the now-iconic "Big Red" dials, instantly recognisable by the bold red "Daytona" text arching above the lower chronograph register. Among collectors, very few are aware of the existence of an exceptionally rare transitional configuration that combines both of these defining traits. Known as the "Sigma Big Red," this hybrid dial variant is among the rarest and most exclusive configurations ever produced for the 6263 and 6265. Highly sought after yet still undervalued relative to its extreme scarcity, it represents an extraordinary long-term acquisition for the discerning connoisseur. The present example showcases one of these exceedingly rare "Sigma Big Red" dials in the striking black execution. Its appeal is further enhanced by the presence of the correct Mk2 black acrylic bezel and matching Mk2 screw-down pushers, preserving the authenticity and coherence of the watch as originally delivered. Of exceptional importance is the inclusion of its original Rolex punched warranty — an extremely rare format for a manual-wind Daytona, issued exclusively for the Far East market. Non-chronometer punched warranties of this type are extraordinarily scarce, adding significant historical weight to this already exceptional ensemble. Dating to 1979, this 6263 "Sigma Big Red" stands as a truly remarkable transitional specimen, very well-preserved and offering a unique opportunity to acquire a Daytona configuration of profound rarity, historical importance, and enduring desirability.
