Description
Patek Philippe Chronograph 5170J - Opaline Pulsation Dial - 18k Yellow Gold
Patek Philippe Chronograph 5170J – Opaline Pulsation Dial – 18k Yellow Gold
The chronograph complication has long been a hallmark of Patek Philippe, combining precise timekeeping with technical sophistication. Unlike simple watches, a chronograph allows the measurement of elapsed time through a start, stop, and reset function, representing both practical utility and mechanical artistry. This complication has been central to Patek Philippe's reputation for producing timepieces that are as functional as they are beautifully engineered.
Introduced as the successor to the beloved 5070, the 5170 followed the same formula but with a significant and influential change: for the first time, the Geneva-based manufacture unveiled a fully in-house chronograph movement. The caliber CH 29-535 PS combines traditional haute horlogerie finishing with modern efficiency, featuring a column wheel, horizontal clutch, and meticulously polished bridges. This movement underscores the brand's commitment to mechanical excellence and its ability to refine even the most established complications.
The case of the 5170 draws inspiration from Patek Philippe's iconic Calatrava line, introduced in 1932. Its design prioritises elegance and harmony, with a 39.4 mm diameter crafted in 18k yellow gold — contemporary in presence yet refined enough to slip discreetly under a cuff. The delicately tapered lugs further enhance the watch's graceful profile and wearability.
The present example, reference 5170J, features a silvery opaline dial defined by exceptional balance and classic aesthetics. Applied indices — Roman numerals at 6 and 12 — pair beautifully with the railroad-style minute track. Notably, the dial incorporates a pulsation scale, a historically meaningful detail once reserved for medical professionals ordering specialised chronographs. The twin chronograph subdials sit slightly lower on the dial, a distinguishing characteristic of the new in-house movement.
Manufactured and sold in 2010, this timepiece has been preserved in excellent condition. It is accompanied by its original Patek Philippe Extract from the Archives, confirming its authenticity and production details. Completing the watch is a brown Patek Philippe leather strap paired with an 18k yellow gold Calatrava Cross deployant clasp — a refined finishing touch for one of the maison's finest hand-wound chronographs.
