Rolex Sea-Dweller 1665 ‘DRSD’ - ‘MK3 Double Red’ Matte Black Dial

Rolex Sea-Dweller 1665 'DRSD' – 'MK3 Double Red' Matte Black Dial The Rolex Sea-Dweller 1665, introduced in the late 1960s, is a legendary dive watch that played a pivotal role in Rolex's pursuit of deep-sea exploration. Designed in collaboration with COMEX (Compagnie Maritime d'Expertises), it was developed to meet the demands of professional saturation divers who required a timepiece capable of withstanding extreme underwater pressures. As the first Rolex to feature a helium escape valve (HEV), the 1665 set the foundation for all future Sea-Dweller and Deepsea models, allowing trapped helium to escape during decompression without compromising the watch's integrity. The 40 mm stainless steel case, significantly thicker than that of the Submariner, provided an impressive 610-meter (2,000-foot) water resistance. Unlike the Submariner, the Sea-Dweller lacked a Cyclops lens over the date window, a distinguishing feature that enhanced legibility under extreme conditions and lent the watch a cleaner, unobstructed view of the dial. Powering the 1665 was the Rolex Caliber 1575, a self-winding chronometer-certified movement with a date function and hacking seconds for precise time setting. The watch was paired with an Oyster bracelet featuring a fliplock clasp, ensuring both security and comfort for divers in challenging environments. The earliest versions of the model, known among collectors as the "Double Red Sea-Dweller" or simply "DRSD," featured two lines of red text at 6 o'clock: "SEA-DWELLER" and "SUBMARINER 2000." These early dials underwent multiple variations until Rolex eventually transitioned to all-white printing, making the earlier red-text versions far more desirable for their rarity and distinctive visual appeal. The present example is one such coveted DRSD. More precisely, it features an 'MK3' dial, recognised for its red text printed directly on the black dial surface. This configuration appears only within a narrow serial range (approximately 3.0 to 3.5 million), where this example fits perfectly. As a result, MK3 dials are notably scarce and highly sought after by collectors. As the first true professional-grade dive watch produced by Rolex, the Sea-Dweller 1665 holds immense historical importance. Its combination of innovative engineering, rarity, and purpose-built design continues to captivate vintage watch collectors across the globe. This particular MK3 Double Red example remains a testament to the model's enduring legacy and has been preserved in good overall condition. Significantly, it also comes accompanied by its original warranty.
