Description

Rolex Submariner 5513 - Stunning & Rare ‘Tropical Meter First’ Dial - ‘Ghost Long 5’ Faded Bezel

First introduced in 1953, the Submariner entered what could be considered its ‘adulthood’ in 1959 with the debut of reference 5512. With this reference Rolex introduced several of the model’s most defining characteristics of the Submariner, including the increased 40mm case diameter and crown guards. The line expanded further in 1962 with the legendary reference 5513, a non-COSC-certified version of the 5512, introduced as a more accessible alternative. Both models enjoyed remarkable longevity: the 5512 remained in production until 1978, and the 5513 until 1989. The timepiece presented here represents the latter reference. While not chronometer-certified, the Submariner 5513 benefits from a cleaner, less cluttered dial, thanks to the absence of two lines of text at 6 o’clock. The 5513 is celebrated as one of the most classic vintage Submariners and is often cited as one of the best Rolex models for those beginning to collect vintage pieces. Yet the example presented here is anything but a starting point; for many, it represents a true Submariner grail. To begin with, this specimen has been preserved in great condition and features a wonderfully charming and very rare ‘ghost’ faded ‘long 5’ bezel. The dial, however, is the real standout. This example boasts the first matte dial variation (MK1) following the early gilt variation, importantly, the only matte configuration to feature the coveted meters-first depth rating, a subtle yet significant detail that adds rarity and reflects a time when Swiss watches were primarily produced for the European market. Shortly thereafter, the dial graphics would be revised to reflect the shift in demand from the Old Continent to the New World. While this combination already makes for a compelling package, it is the extraordinary aging of the dial that truly places this watch at the apex of 5513 collectability. The original matte black surface has transformed into a stunning, homogeneous, rich tropical brown, a patina that truly elevates the piece into a category of its own. To complete the package, the watch is fitted with its correct and original rivet bracelet, serving as the perfect finishing touch. Submariners are extraordinary watches: they hold a special place in history as one of the earliest true dive watches and as an enduring design icon, both within and beyond the watchmaking world. This 1969 specimen is one that no Submariner enthusiast should overlook, a piece that stands remarkably high within the model’s collecting world.
