Patek Philippe Annual Calendar 5396R – ‘Sector’ Opaline Dial – 18k Rose Gold The annual calendar complication was invented by Patek Philippe and introduced in 1996 with the release of reference 5035. Unlike a traditional calendar that requires manual correction at the end of each month, the annual calendar automatically adjusts for months of 30 and 31 days, requiring intervention only once per year, at the end of February. This innovation established a new category of practical yet sophisticated complications within fine watchmaking. In 2006, to mark the 10th anniversary of the complication, Patek Philippe introduced a new reference equipped with this refined mechanism: the 5396. Its case draws on the timeless Calatrava design, conceived in 1932 and rooted in the Bauhaus principle that form should follow function. Crafted in 18k gold and measuring 38.5 mm, the case balances modern presence with discreet elegance, ensuring comfort and versatility for any occasion. The present example, reference 5396R, is fashioned in warm 18k rose gold and distinguished by its captivating sector dial — a layout defined by concentric and radial divisions that recall mid-20th-century Patek Philippe dress watches. This dial configuration is among the most visually appealing and collectible within the reference, harmonising vintage inspiration with contemporary complexity. At 6 o’clock sits a recessed 24-hour subdial that incorporates the moonphase display, elegantly intersected at its base by a framed date window. At 12 o’clock, two apertures for the day and month are positioned symmetrically along the central axis, just above the arched “Patek Philippe Genève” signature. The overall presentation is beautifully balanced and deeply characteristic of the Manufacture’s aesthetic language. Originally sold in 2009, this piece has been exceptionally well preserved.
