Rolex Daytona 6262 - Argenté Dial with ‘Tropical Compax’ - Rare Transitional Reference
Rolex Daytona 6262 - Argenté Dial with Stunning 'Tropical Compax' - Rare Transitional Reference
In 1970, Rolex introduced a new generation of manually wound Daytonas, differentiated only by their bezels: reference 6262, featuring a steel bezel (as seen in the present example), and the reference 6264, fitted with an acrylic bezel.
These two references form a crucial bridge between the earlier 6239 and 6241 and the later 6263 and 6265, and they represent the final Daytonas equipped with pump pushers before Rolex's definitive transition to screw-down pushers. Produced for only about a year and a half, the 6262 and 6264 are the very definition of transitional references, and their scarcity makes them especially prized by collectors.
At first glance, the 6262 closely resembles its predecessors, yet it is with this reference that one of the most iconic elements of Daytona design became definitively established: the 'Daytona' signature arched above the 6 o'clock sub-dial, a subtle yet defining detail that ultimately shaped the model's design language for generations.
Turning the watch over reveals further evolution: a refined case designed to improve water resistance, and the adoption of the Calibre 727, the final and most advanced iteration in Rolex's relentless development of the Valjoux 72 base movement.
Due to its exceptionally short production span, the reference 6262 ranks among the rarest of all vintage Daytonas. The present example is made even more remarkable by its unique aging: the black chronograph registers have gracefully transformed over time into a rich tropical brown, a naturally occurring and highly coveted aging that lends the watch exceptional warmth, depth, and individuality.
For enthusiasts of the Jubilee bracelet, this piece offers an additional rarity: it is fitted with an original and very rare Swiss-made Jubilee bracelet, featuring the correct 74 end links for a manual-wind Daytona, an uncommon configuration that adds refinement while preserving the sporty essence of the model.
Beautifully preserved, this 6262 stands as a superb example of a true connoisseur's reference. Its blend of historical importance, mechanical advancement, and striking tropical registers firmly establishes it as a true grail among vintage four-digit Daytonas.
