Rolex Daytona 16520 - Rare White Luminova Dial - SEL Endlinks - ‘A’ Serial

In the watch-collecting world, the most desirable and collectable iterations of any reference are typically the first and final series. The first series represents the model in its purest form, exactly as it was originally conceived, while the last series reflects its culmination, the ultimate and most refined iteration before significant changes warrant a new reference number or model. For this reason, we are honored to offer, within our selection of 'Zenith' Daytonas in our sale, one of these coveted final-series examples. (See lot 20 for a great early specimen and lot 35 for an exceptional 'Patrizzi' featuring uniquely aged sub-dials.) Bearing an 'A' serial, the present watch dates to 1999, the penultimate year of production for this legendary reference. As such, it incorporates all the technical and aesthetic upgrades implemented throughout the model's lifespan. Beginning with the dial, the infamous 'inverted 6' on the hour subdial had long been corrected by this stage, and the previously 'floating' Cosmograph text aligned more closely with the rest of the top texts. Most importantly, this exact serial marks the pivotal shift from tritium to the safer and more modern Luminova. This luminous material was used exclusively on the 'A' and final 'P' series, adding a layer of rarity and desirability to the present example. The bezel also evolved throughout the model's lifespan and is presented here calibrated to 400 units, with the 240 interval, enabling accurate timing of even the most powerful modern race cars. The bracelet also received a significant upgrade: the original 78360 was replaced by the 78390A, distinguished by its more elegant and refined combination of satin-finished outer links and polished center links, lending the watch a more contemporary character. This evolution also introduced the fliplock clasp for improved security on the wrist. In a final enhancement, as seen in the present example, the end links were redesigned as solid components, adding notable strength and durability to the overall construction. Fitted with a crisp white Luminova dial and preserved in good condition, this final-series example represents the legendary Reference 16520 at its most mature and fully realized form.
