Description
Cartier Tank Américaine XL 1741 - Guilloché Opaline Dial - 18k White Gold
Most people associate Cartier primarily with its prestigious jewelry collections, often overlooking its significant and illustrious legacy as a master watchmaker. In fact, the Parisian maison is credited with creating the very first wristwatch designed specifically for men: the Santos de Dumont.
Though the Santos came first and therefore holds an irreplaceable place in horological history, the most iconic of all Cartier designs remains the Tank. Inspired by the silhouette of the Renault FT-17 tank viewed from above, its debut marked the beginning of an extensive and ever-evolving family of reinterpretations. The name "Normale," applied retrospectively, serves to distinguish that original creation from the many variations that were founded upon it.
Among these variations, none has captured collectors' admiration quite like the Tank Cintrée. Introduced in 1921, its gracefully elongated and curved case was conceived to follow the contour of the wrist, perfectly embodying Cartier's philosophy of elegance through proportion. Production of the Cintrée has always been exceptionally limited, enhancing its status as one of the most coveted and refined expressions of the Tank lineage.
In the late 1980s, Cartier revisited this timeless design, drawing inspiration from the exquisite Cintrée to create a new model: the Tank Américaine. This modern reinterpretation retained the Cintrée's sinuous, rounded profile—designed to hug the wrist—while introducing contemporary refinements.
While the original Cintrée was manually wound, the Américaine was fitted with a more contemporary and robust automatic movement, which also allowed for the addition of a discreet date window at six o'clock, a thoughtful update that enhanced its practicality for daily wear. Another functional advancement was the introduction of a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal, ensuring enduring clarity and durability.
The dial of the Tank Américaine stands as a lesson in subtle refinement, featuring an exquisitely fine guilloché motif on an opaline background, adorned with the maison's classic black Roman numerals and complemented by Cartier's signature blued-steel hands. This intricate decoration pays homage to the earliest Cartier wristwatches and pocket watches, remaining perfectly in tune with the model's heritage-inspired aesthetic.
The present example, reference 1741, represents the Tank Américaine in its most imposing size (XL), fashioned in the quietly luxurious warmth of 18k white gold—a metal choice that underscores its understated sophistication. Originally sold in 2011, this exceptional creation by Cartier has been preserved in excellent condition and comes complete with its original full set.
