Rolex Datejust 1601 - 'No-Lume' Argenté Dial - Jubilee Bracelet - Produced for the Japanese Market
Introduced in 1945 to mark Rolex's 40th anniversary, the Datejust remains one of the brand's longest-standing collections still in production. The Datejust made history as the world's first self-winding wristwatch to feature an automatically changing date at midnight. Though common today, this innovation set the benchmark on how date complications on wristwatches should operate.
Among the Datejust lineage, reference 1601 stands out as the quintessential model. Produced over an extended period, it helped define the collection's signature traits while offering a wide array of configurations in materials, dials, and finishes. Among this variety, the present example may appear at first glance to embody the most classic and quintessential configuration: grey on grey. Yet to the discerning eye, its apparent simplicity conceals a subtle variation that imparts a good degree of rarity.
Boasting an argenté dial that elegantly unifies all of its elements, this example reveals its distinction only upon closer inspection: both the hands and the outer portion of the indices are entirely devoid of lume. It is highly likely that this configuration was produced for the Japanese market, where restrictions on the use of radioactive luminous material led Rolex to manufacture special dials and hands for that region. As a result, examples like the one presented here are quite rare.
The 36mm Oyster case, made of stainless steel, delivers a refined yet versatile presence. Its timeless proportions suit a range of wrist sizes, ensuring enduring appeal across generations. Complementing the case, a stainless steel Jubilee bracelet offers a more elegant alternative to the Oyster bracelet, enhancing the watch's sophisticated character.
Unlike the case, the fluted bezel is crafted in 18k white gold, enhancing the monochromatic aesthetic while adding a subtle contrast in tone, lending depth without disrupting the overall harmony.
Powering the watch is the in-house caliber 1570, a chronometer-rated movement renowned for its precision and durability. Altogether, this 1969 Datejust 1601 represents a rare opportunity to acquire a great example of this classic reference, enhanced by an uncommon and alluring configuration, while still remaining elegantly simple and understated.
