Description

Patek Philippe Calatrava 1571 ‘Spider Lugs’ - Engraved Enamel Dial - 18k Yellow Gold

In 1932, the struggling Patek Philippe was acquired by the Stern family, who were already the owners of the eponymous dial manufacturing company that supplied many of Switzerland's top firms, including Patek Philippe. Their first order of business was to create a simpler model, producible in series, that would still embody the brand's core values of excellence and prestige. That same year, Reference 96 was introduced, marking the beginning of the iconic Calatrava lineage. The name 'Calatrava' was derived from the Calatrava Cross, a symbol that had been a trademark of Patek Philippe since the 19th century. The design was heavily influenced by the Bauhaus school, which was founded in 1919 and closed in 1933, just a year after the production of the Reference 96 began, by the newly ascendant Nazi regime. Bauhaus philosophy emphasized functionality, favoring simple geometric forms and a practical approach to design. This ethos is clearly reflected in the newly born Calatrava: a straightforward coin-edge bezel sits atop a slim case with integrated lugs that gently curve to better conform to the wrist. The very first version of the Calatrava featured a LeCoultre movement, as Patek Philippe had relied on third-party movements before the Stern family's acquisition. However, just two years into production, the Reference 96 was upgraded to feature a new in-house movement. The model had an extensive production run, which lasted until 1973, with endless variations. Patek Philippe also introduced, alongside the 96, new references to fill some of the void left by the 'first born', like Ref. 565 and 570 introduced both in 1938, featuring a more generous 35.5 mm case. Over the years, Patek Philippe has continually experimented with new case and dial designs. The present example is one such creation. Dating to 1947 and bearing reference 1571, this model is distinguished by its striking case produced by Baumgartner, specifically its so-called 'fluted spider' lugs. Crafted in 18k yellow gold, the case design is more flamboyant and intricate than what many typically associate with the line, yet it remains firmly rooted in the Calatrava's DNA. At 35 mm, the case size preserves classic proportions in a slightly larger diameter that suits most wrists while still maintaining a discreet presence. The lugs remain thick and sharply fluted, retaining their definition and character. The watch features an opaline dial with, importantly, the earlier 'long signature', accompanied by applied indices alternating with Roman numerals. Crucially, the dial's graphics are executed in hard enamel, a technique of exceptional skill and rarity, largely abandoned in modern production, even by Patek Philippe itself, due to its complexity. The result is a wonderfully charming and remarkably durable dial, offering a depth and permanence that later stamped dials cannot match. This Patek Philippe Calatrava ref. 1571 is an intriguing interpretation of the legendary line, visually quite unlike its more famous counterparts, yet still unmistakably Patek Philippe, embodying perfectly the maison's core ethos: mechanical excellence, refined design, and timeless understatement. This well-preserved example is accompanied by an original Patek Philippe Extract from the Archives.
