Description
Rolex Explorer II 16550 - Rare Rail “Cream” Dial - Expertise
Introduced in 1971 with reference 1655, the Rolex Explorer II was never meant to replace the original Explorer; instead, it was conceived as a more specialised counterpart within the collection, tailored for professional use. With the arrival of reference 16550, the model entered a new and more technically advanced chapter. While the earlier version was characterised by its fixed 24-hour display and unmistakable 1970s design language, the 16550 represented a clear evolution. It introduced an upgraded movement featuring an independently adjustable GMT hand, a redesigned 24-hour bezel, and a dial layout that aligned more closely with the emerging identity of modern Rolex sports watches.
Created for explorers, travellers, and professionals working across multiple time zones—or in environments where natural light could not be relied upon—the reference 16550 broadened the practical functionality of the Explorer II. At the same time, it retained the adventurous ethos that had defined the model from the beginning, while adding a greater sense of refinement and versatility that reflected Rolex's progression into the final decades of the twentieth century.
From a design perspective, the 16550 represents a true transitional reference within the Explorer II lineage. It marked the introduction of applied hour markers, a sapphire crystal, and a noticeably cleaner, more contemporary dial configuration. The original orange 24-hour hand was replaced by a vivid red GMT hand, reinforcing the watch's dual-time capability. Importantly, the Explorer II was now offered for the first time with either a black or white dial. Over time, many of the white dials developed a distinctive creamy patina—an accidental yet highly desirable ageing effect that has since become one of the most sought-after traits among collectors.
Today, the reference 16550 is widely regarded as one of the most fascinating transitional models in the Explorer II family. Its relatively short production run, combined with rare and collectible dial variations—such as the celebrated \\"cream\" dials and the polished \"rail\" configurations—has firmly established its reputation among vintage Rolex enthusiasts.
Dating to 1985, the present example features one of these desirable Rail Cream dial, characterized by a very clean Cream base and relumed creamy hour markers. With its unmistakable aesthetics, historical significance, and rare dial variant, the Rolex Explorer II 16550 is regarded as a true grail among collectors.
Celebrated for its timeless appeal and enduring legacy in the world of horology, the example offered for sale has been preserved in excellent condition and accompanied with the Expertise in Pen Drive made by Mr.Stefano Mazzariol in 2025.
