The term ‘Oyster Perpetual’ refers to two milestones: the Oyster case, introduced in 1926, and the Perpetual movement, launched in 1931. The Oyster case was the world’s first waterproof and dustproof watch case, made possible by Rolex’s patented screw-down crown and caseback. It revolutionized wristwatch durability by defeating the wristwatch’s greatest enemy: exposure to the elements. However, it also introduced a new challenge, manual winding required the crown to be unscrewed daily, compromising the waterproof seal if not properly closed afterward. Rolex solved this in 1931 with the introduction of the Perpetual rotor, a self-winding mechanism powered by wrist movement. This innovation eliminated the need for daily winding and preserved the case’s waterproof integrity, redefining the future of wristwatches.
