The Cellini collection, now discontinued, was a long-standing line in the Crown’s catalogue, created to offer a more elegant and refined alternative to the brand’s predominantly sporty and purpose-driven watches. Named after the Italian Renaissance artist Benvenuto Cellini, celebrated for his craftsmanship and artistic mastery, the collection embodied timeless sophistication and classical design. Unlike Rolex’s robust tool watches, Cellini models emphasized dress watch aesthetics, featuring slimmer profiles, precious metals, and refined details tailored to those who appreciate understated luxury. The present example, reference 4109, is crafted in 18k yellow gold and features a classically styled round case with slim, sharply angled lugs. Its light Argenté-colored dial perfectly aligns with the collection’s principles of timeless elegance. Roman numerals are printed in black, while an applied 18k yellow gold Rolex coronet sits proudly at 12 o’clock. Just below it, the ‘Rolex Genève’ signature appears in a distinctive serif typeface. At 6 o’clock, the iconic ‘Cellini’ logo is rendered in its characteristic script font. A fine minute track composed of delicate hash marks, slightly thicker at five-minute intervals, frames the numerals with subtle precision, enchanting legibility. The 26mm case is preserved in excellent condition. The coronet engraving and serial number on the outer caseback remain clearly legible, as do all three gold hallmarks, two on the caseback and one on the side of the lug, each sharp, deep, and well-defined. The crispness of the hallmarking, particularly on the outer caseback, suggests the watch has seen very little wear over the decades. Powered by the Rolex Caliber 1601, a hand-wound mechanical movement, this 1978 example is both a refined dress piece and a reliable timekeeper, ready to accompany its next caretaker with quiet sophistication and enduring charm. The watch is fitted with a dark brown lizard leather strap, secured by a Rolex plaqué ardillon buckle.
