Description
Rolex Explorer II 1655 ‘Freccione’ - ‘MK1’ Black Matte Dial & ‘Straight’ Second Hand
In 1971, Rolex reimagined the Explorer, first introduced in 1953, as a more function-driven tool watch with the debut of the Explorer II. Rather than replacing the original model, the Explorer II was introduced as a parallel line. The or for for modernized versions of other Rolex models, such as the GMT-Master II introduced in 1982.
This first Explorer II of what later will become an important model in Rolex catalogue, reference 1655, is characterized by a dial design inspired by the bold and funky aesthetic of the 1970s, the decade in which it was born.
The inaugural Explorer II, reference 1655, stands out with a dial design that reflects the bold, unconventional aesthetic of the 1970s, the era in which it was born. Powered by the reliable Rolex Caliber 1575 (also used in the GMT-Master), the watch is housed in a 40mm stainless steel Oyster case featuring thick lugs and a fully brushed finish, emphasizing its rugged, utilitarian character.
Unlike its predecessor, the Explorer II introduced a practical day/night indicator, made possible by its fixed engraved bezel and distinctive orange 24-hour hand, a feature that earned it the Italian nickname 'Freccione'. Designed with cave explorers and adventurers in mind, this added complication is an essential feature in environments devoid of natural light. It marked a significant evolution in the Explorer line, shifting its purpose from general exploration to more specialized, professional use.
This example, dating back to the first year of production, has been very well-preserved. Being an early example it features the highly coveted and rare 'MK1' dial, and importantly also the 'Straight' second hand that will soon be replaced by a 'lollipop' style second hand.
Discontinued in 1985, the reference 1655 remains a grail piece among collectors, with the Mk1 dial variant, like the present example, being particularly sought-after. Its bold design, historical significance, and unique purpose-driven features cement its place as one of the most iconic vintage Rolex sports watches ever made.
