Description

Cartier CPCP Tortue Monopoussoir Chronograph 2396 - 18k White Gold

CPCP: Four letters that carry deep meaning for collectors and aficionados of the French Maison. An acronym for Collection Privée Cartier Paris, CPCP was introduced in 1998 as a subline representing the highest echelon of the Cartier catalog. Amidst the mechanical watchmaking renaissance of the 1990s, CPCP stood as Cartier’s dedicated response—a series of timepieces crafted in limited series and to the highest standards of craftsmanship. Models in this series typically drew inspiration from the Maison’s exceptional creations before the era of mass production that began in the 1970s—when watches were still handcrafted in France (or London) and creativity flourished, driven by the brilliant, free-thinking minds behind the Maison. This Cartier CPCP model is no exception. It draws inspiration from one of the oldest and most enduring designs in the brand’s storied catalogue: the Tortue. Originally conceived by the visionary Louis Cartier—director of the Paris branch and pioneer of the wristwatch as we know it today—it remains a quintessential expression of the Maison’s timeless elegance and design language. The Tortue Monopoussoir revives an exceedingly rare and distinguished variation of this iconic case, one that unites Cartier’s refined aesthetic with an exceptional and highly sophisticated chronograph movement—truly a needle in the haystack within the vast tapestry of the Maison’s 100-plus years of creation. This exquisite re-edition was introduced in the early years of the CPCP program—roughly 70 years after the original debuted in the 1920s. Inside its elegant case lies the caliber 045MC, a two-counter chronograph movement developed by the renowned specialists at Renaud & Papi and THA—the latter an esteemed collaborative of independent watchmakers that included, among others, the legendary F.P. Journe. The chronograph is operated by a single pusher integrated into the winding cabochon crown—hence the “Monopoussoir” name—allowing the watch to retain its clean, elegant lines. The present example, reference 2396, is crafted in 18k white gold and remains in excellent condition. It features a striking white dial adorned with deep blue printed graphics, offering a bold yet refined contrast that perfectly captures the spirit of this rare and prestigious timepiece.
