Patek Philippe Annual Calendar Moonphase 5396R - 18k Rose Gold

The annual calendar complication was invented by Patek Philippe and introduced in 1996 with the launch of the then-new reference 5035. Unlike a traditional calendar watch that requires manual correction at the end of every month, the annual calendar automatically adjusts for months with 30 or 31 days, needing manual correction only once a year at the end of February. This innovation established the annual calendar as both a highly practical and elegantly complex horological complication. In 2006 to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Annual Calendar Complication, Patek Philippe launched a new reference boasting this practical and exquisite complication: the 5396. The 5396 features a case inspired by the iconic Calatrava design, originally created in 1932. Its design roots are in the Bauhaus principle of 'form follows function', this case exemplifies timeless elegance. Crafted in 18k gold, its 38.5mm diameter strikes the perfect balance—modern enough to feel contemporary, yet small enough to slide comfortably under a cuff, making it ideal for life's most important moments. The present example, reference 5396R, is manufactured in 18k rose gold and features an opaline dial that reflects Patek Philippe's enduring commitment to timeless design. At 6 o'clock, a slightly recessed 24-hour subdial is positioned, with the moonphase complication elegantly set within it on a raised level. Notably, this circular display is interrupted at the bottom by a date window. On the opposite side, at 12 o'clock, two parallel apertures display the day of the week and the month, flanking the central axis and subtly intersecting the 'Patek Philippe' and 'Genève' signatures. This timepiece was originally sold in Singapore in 2013 and has been well preserved since.
