Description
Rolex Daytona 16523 - Black Dial - A Series - Upolished
In the watch collecting world, the most collectible versions of a reference are typically the first and last series. The first series represents the watch in its purest form, as it was originally conceived, while the last series reflects its culmination — the ultimate and most refined iteration before significant changes warrant a new reference number or model. For this reason, we are honored to offer in our sale two examples of the iconic Rolex Daytona 'Zenith' 16523, each representing one of these highly sought-after categories.
Lot number 8 (Lot ID:2808008) showcases a fine example from the inaugural year of production, while the current lot represents a remarkable example from the final series. Bearing an 'A9' serial number, this timepiece dates to late 1999 — just one year before the production of the 'Zenith Daytona' ceased and the first in-house chronograph movement (Caliber 4130) made its debut, powering the all-new reference 116520.
Compared to earlier examples, there are several subtle but notable updates. The bezel is now graduated to 400 units, allowing for timing even the most powerful modern race cars. The infamous 'Inverted 6' was corrected, and the once-'floating' Cosmograph text was aligned with the other four lines of text. A key update was the replacement of tritium with Luminova as the luminous material for the hands and hour markers — a safer, non-radioactive alternative that emits a light-green glow. Additionally, the original bracelet (ref. 78363) was replaced by the then-new reference 78393A, featuring a more secure 'Fliplock' clasp and more solid 'SEL' endlinks.
The present example features a case crafted from stainless steel and 18k yellow gold that remains in remarkable condition: never polished, it retains the original thick lugs. Accompanied by its original box and papers, this example stands as a compelling representation of the final evolution of a legend: the 'Zenith' Daytona.
