Rolex Submariner 14060M - Black '4-Lines Bicchierini’ Dial - Unpolished

In 1989, Rolex retired the iconic and long-running Submariner reference 5513, replacing it with the reference 14060. This new model marked a pivotal transition in the Submariner lineage, carrying the No-Date line into the modern era while preserving much of its vintage character. The Oyster case retained its classic 40mm proportions but was now crafted from Rolex's highly corrosion-resistant 904L stainless steel. One of the most notable updates was the replacement of the traditional plexiglass with a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal, which also enhanced water resistance. The black aluminum bezel insert—an enduring hallmark of pre-ceramic Submariners—maintained the vintage aesthetic, while its unidirectional 60-minute scale ensured reliable timing for diving. Aesthetically, the 14060 continued where the 5513 left off. It featured a glossy black dial with applied white gold 'bicchierini' hour markers and signature 'Mercedes' hands. Early versions used tritium lume, marked by the 'T<25' designation at 6 o'clock, before transitioning to Super-LumiNova in the late 1990s, offering improved legibility and eliminating the need for radioactive material. Around the turn of the millennium, Rolex introduced a significant movement upgrade, giving rise to the reference 14060M—the 'M' denoting 'Modified.' The original Caliber 3000 was replaced by the more advanced Caliber 3130, featuring a full balance bridge and a larger balance wheel for enhanced precision and durability. By approximately 2007, the 14060M also gained COSC certification, cementing its status as a thoroughly modern timepiece while preserving its tool-watch heritage. The present example, dating to 2009, is one of these later COSC-certified models, as exemplified also by the four lines of text at 6 o'clock. It remains in unpolished condition and is offered as a full set, making it a highly collectible representation of this important transitional reference.
