Rolex Daytona 6265 - Rare & Coveted 'Big Red' Black Dial
In the collecting world, few watches hold as much legendary status and significance as the 4-digit Daytonas. Arguably the catalyst for the modern watch-collecting trend, the first model in the lineage was introduced in the early 1960s with the iconic reference 6239. The lineage culminated in 1972 with the release of the final two references before the shift to automatic movements in 1988: the legendary 6263 and 6265.
Distinguished only by their bezels—an acrylic insert for the 6263 and an engraved stainless steel bezel for the 6265—these two models represent the pinnacle of manual-wind Daytonas. As the last of their kind, they benefited from a range of upgrades, standing as the ultimate expression of the classic Cosmograph.
At their heart ticks the Valjoux 727, a refined movement offering a higher frequency for improved accuracy and chronograph performance. Rolex also introduced a larger 7mm Triplock crown. This, combined with a redefined case shape—first seen in the transitional 6262 and 6264—and the revolutionary screw-down pushers originally tested on the prototype 6240, meant the Daytona could finally bear the iconic "Oyster" designation on the dial.
Emerging as a defining feature in the mid-1970s, a bold new detail began to grace select dials: the text 'Daytona' printed in vivid red and elegantly arched above the 6 o'clock subdial. Affectionately—and appropriately—known as the 'Big Red' dial, this variation remains the most collectible and sought-after among the non-Newman Daytona dials. The red 'Daytona' text has captivated generations with its striking presence and unmistakable vintage charm, securing its place as one of the most beloved design elements in watchmaking history.
The present example, reference 6265, dates to 1978, has been preserved in excellent condition and features one of this extremely coveted 'Big Red' in the black variant.
