IWC Ingenieur '500,000 A/m' 3508 - White Dial - Original Box First introduced in 1954, the IWC Ingenieur was dramatically reimagined in 1976 by legendary designer Gérald Genta, evolving from a practical dress watch into a true luxury sports timepiece. However, its niche role as a precision tool for engineers and scientists within the then-emerging luxury sports watch market resulted in poor sales. To address this, IWC followed AP and Patek's lead by introducing a smaller, more wearable 34mm model, that earned the nickname "Skinny" Ingenieur thanks to its slim profile. The present example, Ref. 3508, introduced in 1989, is far from a mere continuation of that line—it stands as one of IWC's most ambitious engineering achievements, fully living up to the model's name. Under the visionary leadership of Günther Blümlein, IWC collaborated with metallurgy specialists Prof. Steinemann and Dr. Straumann to develop the ultimate amagnetic watch. Originally conceived for German Navy mine divers, the project aimed to eliminate the need for traditional Faraday cage by creating a movement inherently resistant to magnetic fields. Built on a heavily modified ETA 2892-A2, the resulting caliber featured a luxurious 21k gold rotor and, more critically, advanced antimagnetic components—including a groundbreaking niobium-zirconium alloy hairspring. The watch achieved certified resistance of 500,000 A/m and remained fully functional during internal tests at an astonishing 3.7 million A/m. Despite its technical brilliance, the model proved commercially unviable, as only a small fraction of the hairsprings passed IWC's stringent quality control, resulting in an extremely limited production run. This rare example, featuring a striking white dial with gold indices and hands, remains in excellent condition and is accompanied by its original box and outer box.
