Description

Rolex Explorer II 1655 ‘Freccione’ - ‘MK1’ Black Matte Dial - Rolex Service

In 1971, Rolex reimagined the Explorer—first introduced in 1953—as a more function-driven tool watch with the debut of the Explorer II. Rather than replacing the original model, the Explorer II was introduced as a parallel line. The or for for modernized versions of other Rolex models, such as the GMT-Master II introduced in 1982. The first Explorer II, reference 1655, is characterized by a dial design inspired by the bold and funky aesthetic of the 1970s—the decade in which it was born. This inaugural reference remained in production until 1985, when the transitional reference 16550 debuted, introducing a design more aligned with the rest of the Rolex professional lineup. Powering the 1655 is the robust Rolex Caliber 1575, the same automatic movement found in the GMT-Master, renowned for its reliability and precision. Housed in a 40mm stainless steel Oyster case with thick lugs and a brushed finish, the watch embodies a rugged, utilitarian aesthetic. Unlike its predecessor, the Explorer II introduced a practical day/night indicator, made possible by its fixed engraved bezel and distinctive orange 24-hour hand—a feature that earned it the Italian nickname ‘Freccione’. Designed with cave explorers and adventurers in mind, this added complication is an essential feature in environments devoid of natural light. It marked a significant evolution in the Explorer line, shifting its purpose from general exploration to more specialized, professional use. This example, dating back to 1973, has been very well-preserved and features the highly coveted and rare ‘MK1’ dial. The watch underwent a full service by Rolex in 2022 and still retains the original protective sticker on the side of the case, indicating it has not been worn since the service. During the procedure, the watch was fitted with Rolex service hands. The present example features a late ‘MK1’ dial, a ‘MK2’ bezel, and a white ‘lollipop’ seconds hand. Preserved in good condition and boasting the rare and coveted ‘MK1’ dial, this example is now offered to the highest bidder.
