Description

Rolex Daytona 16523 - Black ‘Floating’ Dial - ‘R’ Serial - 200 Scale Bezel

Rolex Daytona 16523 - Black 'Floating' Dial - 'R' Serial - 200 Scale Bezel At the 1988 Basel Watch Fair, Rolex unveiled a reimagined Daytona to mark the model's 25th anniversary. After years of releasing new references with only subtle differences between the previous and subsequent models—aside from the screw-down pushers revolution—the Daytona was completely reimagined for the first time since its inception with reference 6239. This new generation, starting with reference 165XX, was powered by the Rolex Caliber 4030, based on the legendary Zenith El Primero. However, Rolex didn't adopt the movement as-is. Each caliber was extensively modified in Geneva, with over 200 changes—including reducing the frequency from 36,000 to 28,800 vibrations per hour, removing the date function, and reworking the balance wheel—ensuring it met Rolex's exacting standards. Visually, the changes were equally impactful. The case size increased from 37.5mm to a more contemporary 40mm, now featuring crown guards flanking the screw-down pushers—bringing the Daytona in line with the brand's professional models. The dial and case design were also modernized, ushering the Daytona into a new era of sport-luxury appeal. Due to limited access to Zenith movements, production remained constrained, while demand soared. This imbalance made the 'Zenith' Daytona the first Rolex to consistently trade above retail on the secondary market—a feat that has been repeated with each subsequent iteration, continuing to the present day. This present timepiece, crafted in the less-common combination of stainless steel and 18k yellow gold, dates from 1988—the inaugural year of production. As such, it features all the hallmark characteristics of a first-series model: the coveted black 'floating' dial, 200-scale bezel, and the distinctive 'inverted 6'. Moreover, the watch remains in very good condition.
