This new reference featured several significant upgrades: a redesigned ‘Maxi’ dial with larger indices, a broader ‘Maxi’ case, and most notably, a ceramic bezel insert, first introduced on the GMT-Master II ref. 116718, released to commemorate the model’s 50th anniversary. The stainless steel version incorporating these enhancements wouldn’t appear until 2010, following an intermediate step in 2009 with the release of the Rolesor (steel and gold) model. When the full stainless steel version finally launched, it came in two variants: the 116610LN with a black dial and bezel, and the all-new 116610LV, featuring for the first time a green dial and matching green bezel—like the present example. The designation "LV" stands for Lunette Verte, French for "green bezel," referring to the ‘Cerachrom’ insert—Rolex’s proprietary ceramic material. ‘Cerachrom’ replaced the traditional aluminum bezel insert, offering several key advantages: exceptional resistance to scratches, UV rays, and fading, effectively resolving long-standing issues of wear and discoloration. This innovation not only enhanced the durability of the 116610 but also introduced a sleek, glossy finish that became a defining characteristic of the modern Submariner. Notably, the bezel’s dive timing numerals are engraved directly into the ceramic and coated with a thin layer of platinum through a PVD process, enhancing both legibility and luxury. This vibrant version quickly earned the nickname “Hulk” among collectors and became the spiritual successor to the earlier 16610LV “Kermit,” which had paired a green aluminum bezel with a black dial for the Submariner’s 50th anniversary. Powered by Rolex’s reliable in-house caliber 3135, the ‘Hulk’ is a modern icon. Preserved in good condition, this timepiece comes complete with its full set.
