Rolex Explorer II 216570 - Black Dial - Like New Condition

In 1971, Rolex reimagined the Explorer—first introduced in 1953—as a more function-driven tool watch with the debut of the Explorer II. Rather than replacing the original model, the Explorer II was introduced as a parallel line. The or for for modernized versions of other Rolex models, such as the GMT-Master II introduced in 1982. The inaugural Explorer II, reference 1655—nicknamed the “Freccione”—embraced a bold 1970s aesthetic, featuring a distinctive black dial and a prominent orange 24-hour hand. Bridging that stylistic gap was reference 16550, produced for just four years starting in 1985. It introduced a dial design more in line with Rolex’s professional series and, for the first time, offered both black and white dial variants. This transitional and short-lived reference was succeeded by the longer-running 16570, which remained in production until it was replaced in 2011 by the 216570. Released to commemorate the model's 40th anniversary, the 216570 paid homage to the original 1655 with the return of the bright orange GMT hand. Echoing this accent, the ‘Explorer II’ text at 12 o’clock was also rendered in orange. In response to contemporary tastes and the rising popularity of larger timepieces, Rolex updated the model with a more substantial 42mm case. To maintain balance, the dial was updated with ‘Maxi’ style hands and hour markers, enhancing both legibility and presence. The 216570 was powered by the then-new Rolex Caliber 3187, featuring Paraflex shock absorbers for improved durability and precision. The present example, sold in 2020, is the black dial variant and remains in near ‘New Old Stock’ condition, still retaining one of its original protective stickers on the case side. Accompanied by its full set and a Rolex travel pochette, this watch represents a compelling modern evolution of one of Rolex’s most iconic tool watches.
