Rolex Sea-Dweller 16660 - Black Matte “Pallettoni” Dial - Mint Conditions

Affectionately referred to as the "Triple Six" by collectors due to its reference number, the Rolex Sea-Dweller 16660 is a pivotal transitional model in the brand's history. Introduced in 1978, this reference served as the bridge between the vintage Sea-Dweller 1665 and the succeeding 16600, incorporating design elements from both generations. Interestingly, Rolex produced the 1665 and 16660 concurrently for approximately five years, highlighting the evolving nature of the Sea-Dweller collection during that period. The Sea-Dweller 16660 was the first in the line to feature a sapphire crystal, replacing the domed Plexiglas used in the 1665. Sapphire crystal, now standard across Rolex models, is highly valued for its scratch resistance and durability. Notably, like all Sea-Dwellers prior to the 2017 update, the 16660 lacks the Cyclops magnification lens over the date window, a design choice that sets it apart from other Rolex watches with a date function and is cherished by enthusiasts. This reference also introduced significant upgrades, including a new movement with quickset date functionality and an increase in water resistance to 4,000 feet—double that of its predecessor. Early examples were equipped with matte dials and painted hour markers, evoking a vintage appearance.
