Rolex Lady-Datejust 69178 - 18K Yellow Gold - Factory “Onyx” Dial

Lot ID 1707010 offers an exceptional example of the Lady-Datejust reference 6917, dating back to 1979 and featuring a striking "Lapis" dial. We are proud to present in this sale a second Lady-Datejust with a rare hardstone dial. The reference 69178 represents an evolution of the 6917 and was produced from 1983 to 1991. Compared to its lapis-adorned predecessor, this model introduces several modern updates. Most notably, it features the upgraded Rolex calibre 2135 movement and a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal in place of the earlier plexiglass. Crafted entirely in 18K yellow gold, the watch is paired with a matching Jubilee bracelet offering a refined and distinctly feminine feel. The fluted bezel, seen here, is a signature element of the Datejust design. Originally engineered to screw down the bezel and enhance water resistance, it is now retained as both a hallmark of Rolex design and a nod to the model's enduring heritage. The standout feature, once again, is the dial. At first glance, it may appear to be a simple glossy black surface. However, the absence of indices and, more importantly, the subtle frame around the date reveal to the discerning eye that it is something far more special: a dial carved from natural onyx. Renowned for its deep black hue and smooth, mirror-like finish, onyx lends the watch a quiet yet unmistakable sense of luxury and depth. The present timepiece, dating to 1985, is preserved in excellent condition, with both case and bracelet showing minimal signs of wear. Most importantly, the onyx dial remains completely free of cracks or deterioration. Hardstone dials are notoriously difficult to produce and were made in very limited quantities.
