Description

Rolex Explorer 14270 - N.O.S. Condition

Rolex Explorer 14270 - N.O.S. Condition As early as the 1930s, Rolex began equipping explorers and mountaineers with Oyster models for their journeys to the most remote and hidden corners of the globe, in order to test and verify the robustness and resistance of the newly developed Oyster case, the first "Water-proof Case." In 1953, Sir Edmund Hillary, accompanied by Sherpa Tenzing Norgay, reached the summit of Mount Everest—the highest peak in the world (8,848 meters)—wearing a Rolex Oyster on his wrist. Introduced in the early 1950s, references 6150 and 6350 were among Rolex's first sport models, alongside the Submariner and Turnograph. They debuted the now-iconic 3-6-9 layout, later known as the "Explorer dial." In January 1953, Rolex registered the "Explorer" trademark, which appeared that same year on both models—strengthening the connection between Rolex and the world of sport—particularly exploration, which was experiencing a strong push in the post-war reconstruction years—and at the same time shaping the philosophy Geneva-based company would continue to follow for decades. Reference 14270, introduced as the successor to the beloved 1016, marked the Explorer's transition into the modern era. For the first time, applied metal numerals replaced the traditional painted markers, set against a glossy black dial that superseded the earlier matte finish. Despite key upgrades—including a sapphire crystal and the new Caliber 3000—the watch retained its classic 36mm case, preserving the clean, rugged DNA that defines the Explorer. The present example, dating to 2000, belongs to the final series of the 14270, distinguished by the use of Super-LumiNova and "Swiss Made" text at 6 o'clock. Preserved in New Old Stock condition, it represents a key transitional reference and is now offered to the highest bidder!
