Originally introduced in 1957, the Omega Speedmaster was designed as a high-precision chronograph built for motorsport timing. It was the first watch to feature a tachymeter scale on the bezel instead of on the dial—a design innovation that has since become standard in chronograph watchmaking. It quickly transcended its original purpose: certified by NASA in 1965 for all manned space missions, the Speedmaster became the first watch worn on the Moon during Apollo 11 in 1969. Its historic significance and timeless design have cemented its status as one of the most iconic timepieces ever created. Introduced approximately 20 years later, reference 3592.50.00 was the first non-numbered Omega Speedmaster to feature the distinctive display caseback. Affectionately nicknamed “Sandwich” for its dual-sided crystal design—notably, the top crystal is crafted from hesalite, while the exhibition caseback features sapphire. Closely following reference 345.0808—with which it shared nearly all technical characteristics—both models were powered by the iconic and renowned Caliber 863. However, this version is distinguished by its contrasting gilt finish—a departure from its numbered predecessor, which featured a more utilitarian copper-toned movement. The present example originates from the early phase of the reference’s production, distinguishable by the “Apollo XI” inscription on the outer edge of the caseback and the highly sought-after 1479 stainless steel bracelet. What truly sets this piece apart is its extraordinary, untouched condition. Having spent its life stored securely in a vault, it remains completely unworn, still retaining the original blue protective wax on the sides and caseback. Although never worn, the tritium used on the hands and indices has naturally aged to a rich beige tone—a desirable trait among collectors and characteristic of the model.
