Description

Rolex Oyster Perpetual 1005 - 18K Yellow Gold - “Serpico Y Laino” Signed Dial

Produced from the early 1960s through the 1970s, the Rolex Oyster Perpetual reference 1005 embodies a refined balance of enduring design, mechanical reliability, and understated sophistication. Housed in a versatile 34mm Oyster case, it effortlessly bridges the gap between an elegant dress watch and a practical daily companion. With its clean lines and well-proportioned silhouette, the 1005 has earned lasting admiration among collectors and enthusiasts alike. Dating to 1963, this example is the rarer version of the reference, crafted in 18k yellow gold. As an early production piece, it retains the elegant "Dauphine" gold hands paired with faceted baton hour markers applied on the argenté dial. The 3, 6, and 9 o'clock indices especially stand out with an elegant three-faceted design that beautifully catches the light. While the hands and markers are beautifully executed, what truly sets this watch apart is the highly coveted "Serpico Y Laino" retailer signature. Positioned just below the "Oyster Perpetual" designation, this rare double signature adds significant historical and collector value, serving as a vestige of a long-gone era in watch retailing. Jewellers and retailers once played a crucial role in introducing and promoting Swiss watch brands abroad. As a mark of distinction, the most prominent among them were occasionally granted the rare privilege of adding their signature to the dial. Serpico Y Laino, based in Caracas, Venezuela, was one such retailer. Founded by two Italian immigrants, the firm became a cornerstone of watchmaking and fine jewelry in the distant capital, and today, its name on the dial signifies both rarity and an unmistakable touch of exotic allure. Powered by the reliable Rolex Caliber 1560 and framed by a fluted bezel, the watch case is preserved in excellent condition. The gold hallmarks on the outer side of the caseback remain visible—a testament to how sparingly and carefully this timepiece was worn.
