Cartier Colisée 1981 - Diamond Case & Lugs - White Roman Dial

Most people associate Cartier primarily with its prestigious jewelry collections, often overlooking its remarkable legacy as a master watchmaker. Yet the Maison is credited with producing the first serially manufactured men's wristwatch: the Santos de Cartier. Over more than a century of horology, Cartier has explored a wide variety of case shapes—most notably square and rectangular. The Cartier Colisée, however, stands out with its rare rounded form. Despite the departure from traditional lines, it remains unmistakably Cartier, embodying the refined elegance for which the brand is celebrated. Its name hints at the inspiration behind its design: Colisée is the French word for Colosseum, the iconic Roman amphitheater. Cartier's Colisée subtly echoes this heritage, blending classical architectural cues with contemporary luxury. Interestingly, the case is not elliptical, but fully rounded, suggesting a reinterpretation rather than a literal homage. This example showcases Cartier's signature savoir-faire, seamlessly blending fine jewelry and watchmaking. Its 24mm white gold case is set with diamonds across the upper bezel and lugs, leaving the central part of the lugs exposed. This clever design emphasizes the Colisée's distinctive two-part lug structure, which might otherwise be lost in the brilliance of the diamonds, and prevents a visually monotonous look. The dial features Cartier's hallmark layout: an opaline base with a matte finish, and printed bold, glossy black Roman numerals. Notably, the traditional "chemin de fer" minute track is omitted—an intentional choice to avoid cluttering the dial's compact surface. Powered by a quartz movement and equipped with Cartier's signature white gold déployante clasp, the watch is presented in very good condition and is accompanied by its iconic red presentation box.
