Cartier Obus 1630 - 18K Yellow Gold & Diamond Bezel

Most people associate Cartier primarily with its prestigious jewelry collections, often overlooking its significant legacy as a master watchmaker. Louis, the eldest of the three grandchildren of the original founder, oversaw the Paris boutique from the late 19th century. Among his many contributions, Louis introduced platinum, then primarily used for industrial purposes, into jewelry (and, later, into watches). Louis is also remembered as the designer behind the Cartier Tank, both in its original "Normale" version and the more elongated variant, which would later bear his name. Inspired by the Renault FT-17 tanks used during World War I, the Tank is not the only creation from the Maison to draw inspiration from the military world. Introduced in 1923 and named the "Obus" — French for "shell" (bullet shell) — its distinctive lug shape takes inspiration from a mortar's projectile. The present example, dating from roughly 70 years later, offers a luxurious and elegant modern interpretation. The 18k yellow gold square case measures 24x24mm (excluding lugs), with a bezel fully encrusted in diamonds. Notably, the renowned blue sapphire cabochon crown has been replaced by a matching diamond-set crown. The opaline dial features a finely textured grain and the classic Cartier dial configuration, with printed Roman numerals and a "chemin de fer" minute track. Interestingly, Cartier pays homage to its past with the choice of hands, swapping the more common sword hands for Breguet-style, or as Cartier calls them, "Pomme" hands.
